Digital Compact Disc

The Compact Disc was intended as a replacement for phonograph records. It's smaller design and lighter weight construction has many advantages. It's sound quality is far better than that of the records that Compact Disc replaced although, their are some audiophiles that would argue the point of the LP. But when it comes to cold hard audio data the LP can't compete with the CD. The CD's specs far exceed any attempt by the LP or cassette.... Hands Down!  The cost of the first generation compact disc players made it to expensive at first but being that compact disc was aimed at the consumer market from the start, made the price fall all through 1980's.Very popular with home entertainment buyers, CD is now the reference standard that all other formats are judged by. For this reason EastCraft has elected to offer this format to it's clients. The Compact disc offers better performance than cassette or LP which gives the recording better impact and clarity. Being that the Compact disc is digital it has no inherent noise or hiss..... very clean. To compare the best grade cassette tape to Compact Disc is to compare black and white to color. The noise floor on a premium grade cassette is roughly about 60 to 70 db. Compact Disc offers a noise floor of better than 100db. To put this in to perspective, cassette tape with a 60db noise floor will offer noise that is 1000 times lower than the strongest signal level present on the tape. The Compact Disc with better than a 100db noise floor will offer noise 100,000 times below the strongest signal level on the disc. That's a noise decrease that is 100 times better than the best cassette tape. This is not to mention the huge increase in dynamic range and much lower distortion.

Compact Disc also has another very important advantage over all other formats. It will not degrade with use. Compact Disc, if maintained and cared for will sound exactly the same after 1 million play cycles. Try this with a cassette or LP. Compact Disc contains digital codes that a laser reads during play back. The laser doesn't harm the CD and therefore causes no damage. The data that the standard CD contains is 16bit audio. This allows a CD, a theoretical noise floor and dynamic range of about 110db and frequency response of 20hz to 20khz although, most recordings never achieve specs that good. The 20bit world has come and gone and with 24bit audio up and growing, I see some changes that will take place in the future although, the CD will still be the standard, the CD's playing equipment will have to change to keep up with the advances. Compact Disc, when manufactured, are stamped by a die, much like the LP records of the past. EastCraft uses a CD recorder that "burns in" (with a laser), small pits and dashes that the laser in your player will read. The blank CD's that EastCraft uses are referred to as CD-R's (Compact Disc Recordable). Their cost is more expensive than a cassette, mini disc or computer data CD-R. Their format is the same as a standard CD and is compatible with all audio CD players.

EastCraft recommends that you have your demo mastered on either Compact Disc or Mini Disc.  Compact Disc will sound just as good as mini disc. You can then enjoy the full benefits of digital sound and can make cassette copies that sound as good as if they were being mastered straight from the multitrack.
